Your taxable turnover
For a UK-established business that is not already VAT registered. Use completed months and include zero-rated sales.
YOUR ESTIMATE
Your VAT threshold check
Enter your figures and run the calculator to see your result.
- Headroom before reaching £90,000
- Amount above threshold
- Expected next 30 days alone
This checks the figures you entered, not your complete registration history. An earlier breach or special rule can still require registration even when these totals are below the threshold. Registration can also be voluntary.
You are over the rolling threshold, but the first breach date is unknown. Review earlier monthly totals and enter the first breach month to calculate dates. Contact HMRC promptly if you may already be late.
You supplied an earlier breach even though this window is below the threshold. A later fall in turnover does not remove an existing registration obligation.

How this tool works
What turnover to include
Use taxable turnover, not profit or all money received. Include standard, reduced and zero-rated supplies. Exclude VAT-exempt and out-of-scope supplies. Certain reverse-charge services and other supplies also count; use HMRC’s full guidance to prepare the amounts.
Rolling 12-month test
At each month end, check the previous 12 months. More than £90,000 triggers the test; exactly £90,000 does not. The registration deadline is 30 days after the first breach month ends. Registration normally takes effect on the first day of the second month after that breach.
Next 30 days alone
If you realise taxable turnover will exceed £90,000 within a 30-day period alone, the deadline is the last day of that period, including the day of realisation. Registration takes effect from the realisation date.
When to get a separate check
For UK-established businesses not already VAT registered. Does not assess overseas business rules, Northern Ireland acquisitions, business transfers, artificial separation, deregistration or exceptions for temporary breaches. A temporary breach exception needs HMRC’s agreement. Dates rely on the first-breach and realisation dates you supply; earlier duties may apply.
